A targeted checklist that guides existing users through a specific feature they have not yet adopted. Instead of a broad onboarding checklist, this template deep-dives into one feature area, walking the user through progressively advanced actions to build competence and habit.
When to Use This Template
Trigger this checklist when analytics show that a user has been active for more than 7 days but has never used a key feature. Show it contextually when the user is near the feature in the UI.
Template Breakdown
Learn what the feature does
Show a brief explainer (text + gif or short video) that demonstrates the feature's value proposition and the problem it solves in under 30 seconds.
Try the basic action
Walk the user through the simplest possible use of the feature — for example, creating a basic report, setting a simple rule, or adding a single item.
Customize or configure
Once the basic action is complete, guide the user to adjust a setting or apply a filter that tailors the feature to their specific needs.
Use an advanced capability
Introduce a power-user capability within the feature (such as automation, scheduling, or bulk operations) to reveal deeper value.
Review the results
Show the user the output or impact of the feature they just used, reinforcing the benefit and encouraging them to repeat the action in their daily workflow.
Best Practices
- Focus each checklist on a single feature — do not mix multiple features into one adoption flow.
- Use progressive disclosure: basic actions first, advanced capabilities later.
- Include real use-case examples relevant to the user's industry or role to make the feature feel applicable.
- Track checklist completion as a feature adoption metric and report it alongside general engagement data.
