Empty State Tour

A contextual tour that activates when a user lands on an empty page — no projects, no data, no content. Instead of leaving users staring at a blank screen, this template turns the empty state into a guided experience that helps them create their first item.

When to Use This Template

Trigger this tour automatically when a user visits a section of your app that has no content yet. Common triggers include an empty project list, an empty dashboard, or a blank canvas.

Template Breakdown

1

Explain the purpose of this area

Show a tooltip or modal that explains what this section of the app is for and what it will look like once populated — consider showing a screenshot or illustration of a filled state.

2

Prompt the first creation

Highlight the "Create" or "Add New" button and encourage the user to click it, explaining what they will be creating and why it matters.

3

Guide through the creation form

Walk the user through each field in the creation form, providing example values and explaining what each field controls so they feel confident filling it out.

4

Celebrate the first item

After the user creates their first item, show a success message and briefly explain what they can do with it next — edit, share, analyze, etc.

Best Practices

  • Include a visual preview or mockup of the populated state to motivate users to create content.
  • Pre-fill form fields with example data that users can edit rather than starting completely blank.
  • Make the tour optional — some users prefer to explore on their own and should not be forced into a guided flow.
  • Track empty-state tour engagement separately from general onboarding to identify UX friction points.
  • Offer a sample or template option alongside the blank creation form to reduce the cold-start problem.
