PostHog product tours alternative
By Olli, founder of Produktly · Updated Oct 9, 2026
PostHog's product tours never left private alpha, and on 27 August 2026 PostHog announced they would stop working with all versions of PostHog on 26 September 2026, together with its in-app announcements. You can keep PostHog for analytics, surveys and feature flags and use Produktly for tours, checklists, tooltips and announcements, with Produktly's events sent back into PostHog. Plans start at €19/month.
What PostHog changed
- Status of product tours
- Private alpha, web only
- Dropped from the roadmap
- 29 April 2026
- Shutdown announced
- 27 August 2026, in PostHog's changelog: tours would "stop working with all versions of PostHog" on 26 September 2026, with support ending the same day
- Also affected
- Announcements (modals and banners), which were part of Product Tours
- Still in PostHog
- Surveys (including NPS), feature flags, experiments and early access management
- PostHog's suggested replacement
- An AI agent skill (npx @posthog/wizard@latest skill creating-product-tours) that writes tour code into your own React app, targeted with feature flags
Why PostHog stopped
PostHog said the feature "wasn't a good fit for our mission". On GitHub, a PostHog engineer pointed to "tons of other options in the market" and "low revenue potential", and suggested that coding agents can build tours that hook into PostHog feature flags. PostHog's own comparison article says PostHog "doesn't have a no-code in-app guide builder for tooltips, walkthroughs, or banners."
Two ways to replace PostHog tours
- Code them with PostHog's agent skill. The tours live in your codebase and are targeted with feature flags. This suits teams where engineers own onboarding, but every change to copy, steps or targeting is a code change and a deploy.
- Use a dedicated tool. Product, customer success or marketing build and change tours visually without a deploy. Produktly also covers what PostHog never had: onboarding checklists, smart tips (tooltips), a public roadmap and a changelog, plus the announcements PostHog is retiring.
- Or let your coding agent build them in Produktly. Produktly's MCP server lets Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT create and update tours, checklists and announcements as drafts, so an agent can build onboarding without adding tour code to your app.
Keep your onboarding data in PostHog
Produktly's PostHog integration sends Produktly events to your PostHog project, EU or US region, using your public project key. Events arrive with a produktly_ prefix (for example produktly_tour_finish or produktly_checklist_finished) on the same person you identify in Produktly, so tour and checklist completion can sit inside your PostHog funnels and cohorts.
