Roadmaps

A roadmap is a hosted page that shows what you're planning, building and have shipped. Users can vote on items, suggest features and comment, so you see what they want before you decide what to build next.

Good for

  • Show what's coming - sections such as "Planned", "In progress" and "Done", linked from your app's help menu, so customers can check for themselves whether a feature is on the way.
  • Collect feature requests in one place - users submit ideas on the Request Features tab, you approve the ones to show publicly, and Move to the roadmap turns a request into a roadmap item.
  • Prioritize by votes - users upvote items and requests, so you can see which ones the most people are asking for.
  • Close the loop on feedback - send responses from a feedback widget to the roadmap with Add to roadmap on the Feedback page, or automatically with Add responses to a roadmap automatically.

How your users see it

The roadmap is its own page on produktly.com, or on your own domain. It shows your public name, logo and brand color. Visitors can have up to three tabs:

  • Roadmap - your sections and the items in each one, which visitors can vote on and comment on if you allow it
  • Request Features - submit a new idea or vote on approved requests, when Allow feature requests is on
  • Changelog - your changelog posts, when Show embedded changelog is on

The roadmap isn't shown by the Produktly script, so it doesn't need the script installed and targeting rules don't apply to it. You link to it from your app, website or emails.

By default anyone with the link can vote and submit requests. To tie votes and requests to your real users, set up user authentication and turn on Require users to be logged in to vote and request features.

Building one

Create a roadmap at produktly.com/app/roadmaps/create. This creates a roadmap called "New Roadmap" and opens its editor. Roadmaps are built in the dashboard only, the Chrome extension doesn't edit them.

  1. Add your content. Use Add section for each column and Add item for the items in it. You can drag items to reorder them.
  2. Set it up. Click Edit settings for the public name, logo, brand color and which features are on. New roadmaps start with voting and feature requests turned on.
  3. Share it. Click View to open the public page, then link to that URL. There is no Publish button for roadmaps: the page works as soon as the roadmap exists, so anything you add is visible to anyone with the link.
  4. Use your own domain (optional). Enter it in Custom domain (optional) under Edit settings and point a CNAME record at cname.produktly.com, see Custom Domains.

New feature requests and comments show up in the editor's Feature Requests and Comments to approve tabs. Only approved requests are shown to everyone, unless Auto-approve feature requests is on.
